The annual festival of Maha Shivratri or Great Night of Shiva is celebrated on night before and day of the new moon of the eleventh month of the Hindu Calendar. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the divine art form known as ‘Tandava’, a dance performed by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Ma on this day.

According to Hindu mythology, Shiva’s Tandava is a vigorous dance signifying the cosmic cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution. Devotees celebrate by offering flowers, fruit and Bilva leaves to the Lord Shiva, and by fasting all-day and holding an all-night vigil.
